E-bicycles with their extended range, enable riders to take on longer and farther journeys. As e-bike sales continue to grow in Europe, especially in Germany, Netherlands and France, this is an important opportunity for the Mio Cyclo brand to re-invest into this market. Aside from work and shopping, leisure remains the #1 use of e-bikes. With the amount of bicycle accessories available in the market, many of them are crowding the handlebar. The trend is moving towards smaller and more compact devices. Cyclo Discover Pal, with its compact footprint fits comfortably in the hand as a standalone navigation device or on a bicycle’s handlebar among other accessories. It sports a 2.8in touch display covered by a glass that runs the length of the device, enhancing the full screen effect.

Conducted a preliminary buttons layout study to determine the best position for the buttons. We tested 2 types of layouts, with the device at 2 different locations on 3 different types of handlebars i.e. Flat, Drop and Cruiser.

Final design: Speckles paint top cover with glossy hatched home button.

While doing field tests, we found that the old mount deforms significantly when the cable ties are tightened with pliers, a tool many riders use. This deformation made attaching Cyclo devices more difficult, leading to poor usability. Furthermore, there were height reductions that could be improved upon.

The new mount smallest height dimension stands at 6mm, which is about a 50% height reduction compared to the old mount.

Exploring alternate CMF proposals and techniques such as speckles painting, water transfer and granules.

Pal scale reference on a medium sized bicycle handlebar. Sometimes, e-bikes will have their own bicycle computer, some small some bigger, therefore Pal's relatively small footprint allow other devices such as headlight, phone holder to co-exist on the handlebar.
